Carbon prices recorded further gains, hitting fresh 9-year highs on Wednesday. In a general upturn on the UK gas market, the front month gained 0.98p and

remaining summer months were up by an average of a penny. Seasonal contracts also rose on the day but gains tapered off further out the curve. On the oil market, West Texas fell by 30 cents while Brent crude eased by just 10 cents to $71.62.

Market Update

  • Wednesday 21 August 2019:Crude oil prices trended upwards again yesterday with Brent crude trading around $60.00 a barrel and settling just above that trigger price

  • Wednesday 21 August 2019:The U.S. benchmark, West Texas, also gained marginally to settle at $56.34 to leave the differential between the 2 major benchmarks at its lowest since July 2018

  • Wednesday 21 August 2019:An early surplus was eroded over the course of the day, leaving the UK gas system 4MCM short at close of business as demand remained above 150MCM

  • Wednesday 21 August 2019:Prompt gas prices, which opened higher, recorded strong gains with the spot price up by 1.55p and day ahead up by 0.90p
